Long term improvement plans for Union Chain Bridge wanted
Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council’s Planning Committee at its last meeting (07.08.07) requested that Northumberland County Council (NCC) produce long term plans for the conservation of the Union Chain Bridge.
Chairman of the Committee, Councillor Brian Douglas said: “NCC put forward plans for temporary repairs to the bridge which we agreed, and although we welcome the fact that the replacement hangers are to be made by local tradesmen, Members are concerned that the long term conservation of the Bridge has not been addressed.
“2020 is the bi-centenary of the Union Chain Bridge. The 2020 Project group are drawing up plans to celebrate this event. It would be a real missed opportunity if the bridge was not a fully functioning vehicle-carrying suspension bridge through lack of long term maintenance.
“We have requested that NCC comes back to us as soon as possible with a detailed plan to fully restore this historic bridge so that it can be preserved for current and future generations,” he said.

AN historic bridge spanning the River Tweed has reopened following the completion of repairs which forced its closure five months ago.
Engineers were forced to close Union Chain Bridge, near Horncliffe, when one of the bridge hangers snapped in March following high winds.
Northumberland County Council workmen were on site early last Thursday morning and took only a couple of hours to carry out the repairs needed so the bridge could reopen.
The bridge's reopening will come as a welcome relief to drivers wanting to travel the few hundred yards between Horncliffe and Paxton who have had to follow a ten mile diversion via the Whiteadder Bridge on the B6461.

AN historic bridge spanning the River Tweed which closed because of damage is expected to reopen by the end of July.
Engineers were forced to close Union Chain Bridge, near Horncliffe, when one of the bridge hangers snapped in March following high winds.
Northumberland County Council has assessed the damage and has now put a repairs programme into place. As the bridge is listed by English Heritage, the council has had to apply for listed building consent, which is expected to take up to eight weeks.
A Northumberland County Council spokesman said: "This order was necessary to safeguard the bridge from further damage and protect the traveling public.
Helped found Project 2020 in 2007 after the closure of the Union Chain Bridge due to structural concerns. Project 2020 aims to ensure the survival, maintainence and beauty of the bridge for the future. Project 2020 plan to celebrate the bi-centenary of Union Chain Bridge in 2020.
